I love music. And I love some records. According to my subjective opinion I recommend to listen to the following records.
One of my favorites is the Norwegians guitar player and composer Terje Rypdal, who recorded for the German ECM-Label more than 20 records. ECM released a
remastered edition of tracks, which have been selected by the artist. The CD is called "Rarum" and can be purchased at www.ecmrecords.com. You will find great guitar music between rock-jazz, jazz and e-music.
The Tunisian Oud-player Annouar Brahem made a new record, combining piano and accordion with the oud. It is music, which desires a concentrated listener. The
“Pas du chat noir” is available at www.ecmrecords.com.
May 2002: Some weeks ago I had the pleasure to listen live to the music of Huong Thanh, a famous singer from Vietnam, accompanied by Nguyen Le. With a wonderful
group they performed traditonal vietnamese songs, arranged in a modern jazzlike form by Nguyen Le. I discoverd two records, which document this collaboaration: Huong Thanh: “
Moon and Wind” ACT 9269-2 and “Dragonfly” ACT 9293-2. If you like modern world music, you must to listen to them.
Last week in Cologne a young Lady from China performed a solo concert on the chinese Erhu, a two stringed violin. YU hong-mei
is a master on this instrument. She plays ethnic music in a very serious manner and has already won may competitions and prizes with her great music. The two strings of her Erhu made me forget the time. You can listen to her music at “String Glamour” Wind Records SMCD 1010, published in Taiwan.
Dhafer Youssef is an oud-player from Tunisia, who works together with guitar-player Wolfgang Muthspiel. His record “electric sufi”published 2001 at Enja-Records presents great modern Jazz-Music, based on Arabian music. (Enj-94122)
His former record “Malak”, published by Enja, too features Dhafer Youssef on oud and as a very interesting singer. If you like the combination of Arabian
music and Jazz, listen to these tunes! (Enj-9367-2) You can get this records at www.enjarecords.com
Nguyen Le (guitar, guitar-synth) has published a record (E_L_B) together with Peter Erskine (dr) and Michael Benita (bass).at www.actmusic.com. (ACT 9289-2)) Great guitar tunes, modern Jazz played with big technique and feeling.Nguyen Le lives in Paris and you
can hear the influence of the north African musi, which is very present in Paris. I love this record.
Another great guitar-player is Philip Catherine from Belgium. I listen to his concerts every time he plays in my region and buy every new record I can get. He has a more
classical Jazz-approach and a great feeling for melodies. Some people speak of him as a modern “Django.” He publishes his records at Sony Music France, Disques Dreyfus. His
last record is called “Guitar Groove”. (FDM 36599-2)
That are my very personal recommendations. I will be very happy for each feedback.
